Olivia Sawbridge

Hello all!
This weeks' blog comes from student Olivia Sawbridge who is in her first year of ATS. Check it out below.

OLIVIA:

" Hey! My name is Olivia Sawbridge and I have been cast as Myrtle Bagot in the play 'Still Life' in ATS' upcoming production of Noel Coward's 'Tonight at 8.30'.

'Still Life' is a romantic drama set in 1936 in a fictional tea room in Milford Junction station. The story revolves around three love affairs - Laura/Alec, Myrtle/Albert and Beryl/Stanley.
My character, Myrtle, is described by Coward as 'buxom' and 'imposing'. She is a character so different from most of my previous work and I've really relished that opportunity to explore and develop this character.

Fortunately, I have had the opportunity to work with the entire cast of 'Still Life' as Myrtle rarely leaves her precious tea room. However, I do have to make a special mention for the wonderful Harry Durcan (Albert) and Beth Sissons (Beryl) as I work with these two very closely - I love working with them!
Watching all my cast members during rehearsals is truly thrilling and I have learnt so much from each and every one of them.

There are some great challenges an actor has to face when working on Coward's texts. Personally, I've found the biggest challenge is delivering the specific rhythm Coward's plays require. I've been fortunate enough to see productions of Noel Coward's work and when the actors nail it - it's truly hilarious.

This is my first year of ATS and to say it has changed my life is an understatement. I find it hard to put in to words how much this school and everyone involved means to me - so in the words of Miranda Hart 'bear with'. The ensemble of actors Amanda Redman has put together is extraordinary.

I feel this is a testament to Amanda and the wonderful team she has behind her. The commitment, discipline and professionalism she demands is first rate - she runs ATS rehearsals as a professional job and expects that same dedication in return. The opportunity to learn from an actress at the top of her game is rare. I have learnt so much already from Amanda, the visiting professionals that give masterclasses, and my fellow cast members. Most importantly, I have met the most amazing group of creative like minded people. When rehearsing as intensively as ATS requires it is important to spend time together as a company outside the rehearsal room having fun and letting off steam - which we do!

The passion Amanda and Freda (Amanda's right hand woman) have for ATS is infectious. Anyone who is thinking of auditioning for ATS - just do it! You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. In the short time I have been with ATS I have learnt so much and made friends for life. Not only are you auditioning for a part time acting company - you are auditioning to be part of a full time family. "
